I’ve spent the last 60 days working with 10 different bidirectional scan tools on a fleet of test vehicles ranging from a 2012 Toyota Camry to a 2024 Ford F-250 diesel. My team logged 280 hours of active testing, ran 1,400 individual component commands, and pushed each tool through real shop workflows to find out … Read more

Pulling a transmission without a dedicated jack is one of the most frustrating jobs in any home garage. I learned this the hard way the first time I tried balancing a cast-iron transmission on a stack of 2x4s and a regular floor jack. A proper transmission jack is a heavy-duty hydraulic lift built specifically for … Read more

I learned the hard way that rebuilding a 350 small block on the floor is brutal. My back gave out after day two, and I scratched my garage floor dragging the bare block back and forth. That was the day I bought my first engine stand. After spending three months rotating between eight different stands … Read more

When I first tried to remove the swirl marks on my old Honda, I honestly panicked at the thought of touching the paint with a machine. I had read horror stories about people burning through clear coat in seconds, and I was convinced I would do the same thing. That fear kept me hand-polishing for … Read more

I pulled a 380-lb V8 out of a 1968 Camaro last spring using a borrowed cherry picker, and the relief of having a real shop crane under that engine made me wish I had bought one years earlier. That project is exactly why I started testing the best engine hoists for home garages you can … Read more

I still remember my first attempt at machine polishing back in 2019. I grabbed a rotary buffer, pressed it against my hood, and watched in horror as a thin line of clear coat vanished. That $400 mistake taught me what thousands of detailing enthusiasts eventually learn: a dual action polisher is the only sensible place … Read more

I’ll be honest with you: the first time I changed my own oil, I used a cut-off milk jug and a prayer. It worked, sort of. The floor looked like a crime scene for a week, and I lost about half a quart to splash. That night I ordered the NEIKO 20762A, and ten years … Read more

Changing your own oil saves money and gives you control over what goes into your engine, but the mess of crawling under a car stops most people before they start. That is exactly where the best fluid extractors for oil changes change the game. These tools pull warm oil straight up through your dipstick tube … Read more

I pulled into a friend’s driveway at 9 PM last fall and nearly walked into his garage door because his headlights were casting a dull amber fog instead of a usable beam. He had been driving with those cloudy, yellowed lenses for two years because he thought replacing them meant an expensive dealer visit. One … Read more

I spent three months testing foam cannons on everything from my daily driver sedan to my buddy’s 35-foot RV, and I learned one thing fast: the right foam cannon turns a 45-minute wash into a 20-minute breeze. The wrong one wastes soap, leaks everywhere, and leaves you scrubbing like you never sprayed foam at all. … Read more
