THE NAUTICA MALIBU TRIATHLON RETURNS TO ZUMA BEACH

Over 2,000 Celebrities, Athletes and Weekend Warriors Race for Charity

Bar is Raised to Surpass 2004 Proceeds for Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation

Malibu, California – Famous faces and determined athletes of every stripe will meet on the sands of Zuma Beach in Malibu, California on Sunday, September 25th to compete in the 19th annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon. Benefiting the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, organizers predict this year’s fundraiser will pull in more than $275,000. More than 2,000 participants and thousands more cheering them on will be on hand for the race and the full weekend of scheduled events.

Celebrities and athletes will gather on Zuma Beach before dawn and stand shoulder to shoulder at the starting line. A shotgun fired precisely at 7:15 a.m. releases the competitors who race into the pounding Pacific for a bracing ½ mile swim, the first leg of the competition. An 18-mile bike ride along the Pacific Coast Highway is next, followed by the final 4-mile scenic run up to Point Dume and back.

In addition to the celebrities giving their time for a good cause, the Nautica Malibu Triathlon attracts weekend warriors, corporate teams and first-timers who give the event a warm camaraderie. But make no mistake, the competition is fierce. The event draws a large contingent of professional triathletes, including members of the local LA Tri Club who will be defending their current title. The event is an official race recognized by the USAT as the Southwestern Regional Club Championship.

Perhaps the most heroic participants are the challenged athletes. Each year both individuals and teams compete for the fastest time – a title that is becoming more and more competitive each year.
Competing with the most difficult physical challenges, these athletes have the determination and mental strength of a true triathlete.

Expect to see new faces this year giving their all and edging out seasoned celebrity participants. Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), David Duchovny (House of D), Poppy Montgomery (Without A Trace) and Emily Procter (CSI: Miami) were just some of the celebrities who sweated it out last year in service of this worthy cause. Early celebrity sign-ups this year include Tate Donovan (The O.C.) who returns to defend his title as winner of the “Celebrity Individual Race”, Emily Proctor (CSI: Miami), Giovanni Ribisi (Flight of the Phoenix), Mark-Paul Gosselaar (NYPD Blue), Estella Warren (Planet of the Apes) and John Cryer (Two and a Half Men) with many more expected over the next few months.

But, it’s not only the celebrities who will sweat it out for the kids. Leaving their box-office battles for the weekend, the Entertainment Industry will also go head to head on the sand, competing in the “Entertainment Industry Challenge.” Entertainment giants including Disney, Warner Bros. and
DreamWorks will all be vying for the “EGPAF Spirit Plaque” awarded for most money raised, and the “Studio Cup” awarded for the fastest time.

Warner Bros. and DreamWorks will certainly have their work cut out for them, taking on Nautica Malibu Triathlon Entertainment Industry veteran, Disney. Disney’s teams, led by CEO Bob Iger are the reigning champions of both the “EGPAF Spirit Award” and the “Studio Cup” - raising over $90,000 last year and recording the fastest time. They won’t be giving up either title without a fight!

Not allowing the Entertainment Industry to have all the limelight, the corporate giants of Los Angeles will compete in the “Corporate Challenge”. This year, Herbalife, the official nutrition sponsor, will defend their title against the likes of Nestle, Kaiser Permanente, Bosley and Toyota.

Since its inception, the Nautica Malibu Triathlon has grown from a standard swim, bike, run triathlon to a fun-filled weekend of events with activities starting the day before. This year will again see the famous sand castle demonstration, along with instructional clinics on topics such as biking, training, motivation, wellness and nutrition. On race day there are haircuts from Paul Mitchell for a cash donation to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDs Foundation.

In recognition of its fundraising participants EGPAF holds a Celebrity VIP Brunch immediately following the triathlon. Hungry participants and spectators who raise $125 are welcomed to the exclusive on-site brunch where they’ll find celebrities mingling with everyone while enjoying delicious fare from Trancas Market, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Il Fornaio, Naked Juice and others. 100% of these donations will go directly to EGPAF.

Of course, since it’s for the kids there are activities just for them. The Nautica Tot Trot is a crowd favorite where kids under 12 compete in a 50 or 100 yard dash. “Tot-trotters” who raise money become EGPAF “Heroes” and the child who raises the most money gets a special “Hero” prize. All participants receive a Tot Trot race bag, commemorative race medal and race t-shirt. The $20 on-site registration fee is donated to EGPAF.
