NAUTICA MALIBU TRIATHLON CROWNS CHAMPIONS

"General Hospital's" Rademacher Wins Celebrity Divsion for Third Consective Year

Los Angeles, CA (September 15, 2002) – Under a thick, early morning marine layer, 2100 competitors gathered in the sands of Zuma Beach to compete in the 16th Annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon. The event raised more than $100,000 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the largest donation to date.

Mark Lees crossed the finish line in 1:19:48 to claim the event title as well as be crowned USA Triathlon Southwest Regional Club Champion. Women’s winner Michelle Jones was the second individual competitor across the line, finishing in 1:28:48 to stake her claims.

In the Celebrity Male Division, Ingo Rademacher (General Hospital) notched his third consecutive win finishing in 1:38:17. Rademacher found himself in second place behind Michael Newman (Baywatch) following the opening swim portion of the event, but overtook Newman on the cycling leg to establish a lead he would never surrender. Runner-up Daniel Alexander (Shark Attack 2) was just 31 seconds behind Rademacher while third place finisher David Ono (KABC) crossed the finish line at 1:40:03.

Competitors of the 2002 Nautica Malibu Triathlon were challenged first by a ½ mile swim in the Pacific Ocean. Upon exiting the surf, racers shed their wetsuits and took to their bicycles for an 18-mile ride up the Pacific Coast Highway to Leo Carrillo State Park and back to the transition area. The event concluded with a four-mile scenic run to Point Dume and back.
