Celebrities Return to Compete in the 16th Nautica Malibu Triathlon Benefiting the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation

Will Ferrell, Ingo Rademacher Among Those Participating to Date

Los Angeles, CA (July 30, 2002) – Some of Hollywood’s most physically fit personalities are preparing to compete for a good cause at the 16th Annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon, to be held at Zuma Beach in Malibu, CA, on Sunday, September 15, 2002, starting at 7:00 a.m. Returning competitors include Ingo Rademacher, Ian Ziering, Jose Solano and Andy Lauer. Newcomer Will Ferrell will join the race this year along with many more celebrities and athletes that are also expected to join. Proceeds from the Nautica Malibu Triathlon will benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF).

The popularity of this star-studded event continues to grow and is looking to sell out again this year with 2,000 competitors and as many spectators. The Nautica Malibu Triathlon is an entertaining event offering something for everyone. The weekend’s festivities begin on Saturday, September 14th with a sand castle contest beginning at Zuma Bach at 10:00 a.m. Anyone can enter and bring the family out to compete or just watch the competition. The beach expo will take place from 1:00-5:00 p.m. providing booths with clinics scheduled throughout the day as well as a FunZone for children featuring face painting and various other activities, and a rock climbing wall provided by event sponsor Arrowhead®. The Tot Trot is a race for children under 12 taking place Sunday morning just prior to the awards ceremony.

The Nautica Malibu Triathlon, the USA Triathlon Southwest Regional Club Championship, features a ½ mile Pacific Ocean swim, an 18-mile bike ride along the Pacific Coast Highway and ends with a 4 mile scenic run to Point Dume and back. The race takes place at beautiful Zuma Beach, providing spectacular views for competitors and spectators. Racers have the option to compete individually or as part of a relay team.

Nautica, in its sixth year as title sponsor of the triathlon, has helped raise more than $310,000 to benefit EGPAF. “We love the spirit and camaraderie among celebrities and competitors for which this triathlon is so well known.” said David Chu, Nautica's founder and chief designer. “This year with new competitors, old friends and the tremendous support of the community, we look forward to raising even more money than ever.”
